Roadways Literacy Academy Saskatoon Programs

We are a Qualified Independent School offering a full Saskatchewan curriculum including literacy, math, science, social studies, fine arts, health and physical education for our students.

Research shows that intensive, individualized programs are the most effective way to improve the results of struggling students. We provide a variety of individualized programs for students from grades 1 - 8 who struggle with Reading and Math in Saskatoon.

As students progress through the grades and content becomes heavy, they find that support is needed in all areas of study.

Technology also plays a larger role, as we work to make all information accessible and provide alternate ways for our students to demonstrate their learning.

Individualized programs

The majority of our students struggle with a language-based learning disability better known as dyslexia. Dyslexia affects 15 – 20 % of our population and shows up as a spectrum causing varying degrees of difficulty.

We offer a variety of flexible individualized programs to support the unique learning styles of our students. Many students attend 3-5 days per week for intense literacy instruction. Others attend for math instruction as well as literacy. And still others choose our full-time option that includes a full Saskatchewan curriculum.

Low teacher-student ratios

In order to provide intensive, individualized programming, we maintain small groups of 3 to 4 students per teacher.

Students may be grouped in multi-aged pods and may be working at different levels from others in their pod. This is made possible through the individualized programs being offered.

Flexible
enrollment

We have found that with a small percentage of our students, we are able to provide timely remediation and get them back into their classrooms at grade level within a 4-month window.

Other students require intensive support for a full year or more. For those students we also focus on strategies using today’s incredible technology to allow students to access the same information as their peers and demonstrate their learning in a way that matches their learning style.

Literacy Program

The Roadways Literacy program is based on current research, “The Science of Reading,” and covers the 5 main areas of literacy: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension, often referred to as The Big Five.

Roadways to Reading is effective for all readers, but particularly so for those who struggle. Geared to their individual needs, the instruction provided for our students is delivered through a systematic, deliberate and explicit approach. Our one-on-one or small group structure allows modeling of new skills, providing daily review and practice with immediate feedback.

Our data shows that struggling students, like many of our clients, will gain as many reading levels in 4 - 5 months as their peers will gain in 10 months in the regular classroom.

Strong individualized programming, plus the intensity provided by small teacher-student ratio and increased instruction time, are responsible for this enhanced level of growth.

Academics is just one area where we see growth. We also see increased confidence and less anxiety as the students’ skill level increases.

Math and Entrepreneurship Program

To help students who struggle with math, we focus on the four basic number operations as well as providing students with a strong foundation of number sense. We use life skills math (like counting money, telling time, and the skill of estimating) to introduce and practice each number operation.

Entrepreneurship becomes a lifeline and a chosen lifestyle for 35% of people diagnosed with dyslexia. Because of this fact, and because it has proven to be so valuable to learn in a “hands-on” way, we have added entrepreneurship to our math curriculum.

All of our students start their own businesses. They design products and packaging, plan budgets, and research and create advertising. Our students are learning essential life skills while at the same time putting their number operations to work in a meaningful way.

French Literacy Program

Embracing the latest research in "The Science of Reading."

Sylvie Literacy Program comprehensively addresses the five key areas of literacy: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Designed to benefit all French readers, my program is especially impactful for those who have been diagnosed with dyslexia or other learning disabilities. Tailored to meet individual needs, the instruction follows a systematic, deliberate, and explicit approach. Whether through one-on-one sessions or small group settings, students receive personalized guidance, featuring the modeling of new skills, daily review, and practice, all accompanied by immediate feedback.

Academic improvement is just one facet of the growth I witness. I also note a boost in confidence and a reduction in anxiety as students' skill levels increase.

 Here’s what parents are saying:

My son, who has multiple learning and processing disabilities has received instruction at Roadways. The progress that he has made due to the benefit of this highly specialized and professional instruction is beyond compare.
— Kirsten Finn
Roadways Literacy Studio has given our children the opportunity to experience success and regain some of their confidence. The low student to teacher ratio, explicit instruction, research-based programming, and a student body all with similar needs, has played a huge role in this life changing experience for our children.
— Aimee Osmundson
The academic, social and personal growth experienced has been amazing. It is like we have a new person in the home. She comes home engaged, excited and proactively discusses what she has learned at school each day. There is no effort required to get her ready and out the door each morning and her confidence continues to grow day by day. Family dynamics have improved greatly.
