Why You Should Come to Roadways
One component of our literacy program that has come far more into the fore this year is non-fiction writing, especially in the form of essays. This is due to our older students, particularly our couple of Grade Nines, but strategies for non-fiction writing have proven to be quite helpful for kids of all ages when it comes to explaining their ideas, working through harder-to-understand topics, and practicing thoughtfulness.
This example comes from one of our students, Sylvie, writing about why you should consider coming to Roadways. As you can see, using a graphic organizer, Sylvie was able to fully articulate her thoughts and illustrate three good reasons why Roadways is a great school to attend: 1) How nice people are, 2) What types of learning we do, and 3) How much fun we have. I’d agree with Sylvie on all those points, and she did such a great job expressing this in her complete essay! Having more tools to assist in organizing thoughts and concepts is a definite boon to students with executive dysfunction and dyslexia. They are able to fully explain themselves in a way that makes sense to both writer and reader and they’re so proud of being able to do so!
